Wheels Day 2003 by Simon  Phillips

Hi Holmsey, thought you night be interested in some snaps from Wheels Day 2003 – a popular event with the Victory Wheelers as it’s a nice drive up there.  Some of the club were going straight there but a few of us met up at 8am..ish on Good Friday at Wickham Square.  The sun was already making a showing but unfortunately we couldn’t find coffee & donuts so we couldn’t even pretend we were in So-Cal.  The crew was Martin in his newly acquired (from Calvin) 32 roadster, Mark’s flamed A sedan, Mick’s classic Capri, Steve’s Pontiac, Rob’s Chevy nomad, Terry’s woody, a lovely cal-look bug and Calvin on his classic Harley (classic meaning you have to work by the roadside as we were to discover).   I was hoping to have got my 32 Tudor on the road for Wheels day but despite the midnight oil its still some way off.

Set off at 8.30 for a leisurely cruise up the A32/A31 and despite the sunshine it was bloody cold in Mart’s roadster, so woolly hats & jackets were the order of the day – along with big cheesy grins – thanks for the ride Mart.

After a few hills Calvin was dropping back so we pulled up to wait.  Tail-end bug driver reported that he was suffering clutch problems on the Harley but he had a tool roll so was going to sort it in a lay-by.  Off we go again and the weather is really looking good, get to the site just before 10am (start time) and the place looks full already.

Quick scout around reveals loads of traders already doing brisk business and the stream of cars coming in never seems to stop.  You get all sorts of wagons at Wheels Day but that makes it more interesting for gear heads.

Brooklands is the perfect venue for a one-day event cos its big & flat and easy to get to (for us!).  The site has apparently been sold to Mercedes so the Surrey’s won’t be able to use it next year, but let’s hope they can find another site for the 30th run – especially as I want to drive there in my rod!  Spent the day just strolling around and chilling out, chatting to mates and looking for bargains- add in the scorching sun and it’s a winner.  Calvin made it after rebuilding the bike by the road, so we didn’t feel so bad about leaving him behind!

Bristol boys & girls on tour. Just a small part of the huge line-up, seem liked thousands of motors
For me Del’s 32 (left) has to be the nicest roadster around

did someone go home with a new project? (the coupe was for sale) V-Dubs big & littles?

love those new wheels being a one-dayer there were a few fenders on display, Nick Taylor's fenders were a work of art

cool looking coupe........... wouldn’t want to polish this lot. Bill Gabb's oh so Red 34 I think!

3-some enjoying the sunshine......... need your shades for this one.

This cool ex-drag Bug looked like a recent Cal import?- complete with ‘desert bloom’ rusty roof + pie wagon

Modified was beautifully built...this wicked T project had some lovely touches.

Fell in love with this lovely channeled roadster...cool Moon scooter!

Tasty coupe..........The wheels & stance on this Poncho really brought it alive.

Porsche wheels seem popular with the V-Dubbers, this one looked wicked..........Classic & Cool.

Planet Voodoo was amazing in the flesh (though sadly the flesh from last month’s CC was missing!) Love that one gold tooth...
Can’t wait to see gassers at the drags this year.

Lovely Lovely....................Shoebox looks wicked at this angle.

Ex Gaz O'conners 49 Chevy now owned by Barclay Hollands.... Yum Yum and more Yum Yum!!

Now that’s a sensible family car… A 59 Mercury Station Wagon.
Before we knew it the event started to wind down and folks headed off.  Best place to sit was the exit road and soak up the rumble of V8s.  Picked up a sun tan, a T shirt, a set of hub caps (thanks Keith at NSRA) and a few ideas so it was a great day out.

Exit road was tempting to a few…......................So-long Wheels Day,  let’s hope its not the last.
Great drive home in the still-hot sun, I even got a turn behind the wheel – cheers Mart.

Back home it was back to reality for me and my 32 sedan.  Finished the wiring this weekend and should be mobile in a couple of weeks now, perhaps I should set up a camp bed in the garage?   New target is now Billing! Cheers Holmsey, Simon Phillips (Victory Wheelers)
