Surf Coast Cruisers 2002 (by Paul Dorrington)

Newquay, Cornwall

What’s this? A new show in Cornwall? No 300 miles or more to travel? Well, better go and take a look then.

In all seriousness, there are very few shows or events on the rodders calendar that take place in this part of the country. Run to the Sun is the only other event that springs to mind, although the new swap meet at Taunton is not too far away. Cornwall does seem to be becoming a hotbed of rodding activity of late though with a couple of new rod shops having opened fairly recently. Having said all this, it seemed to me that if the local club could put on a show, then the least I could do was to attend and show some support.

Mike Noble was there in his always-lovely coupe. I have a real soft spot for this car with it’s traditional hot rod red with whitewalls and spot on stance. Don’t change a thing Mike, unless you are passing the keys this way.

Alongside Mike’s coupe was a collection of rods with a traditional flavour, this hiboy sedan really caught my eye. I just love the feel of it, barely legal, muddy and a bit tatty but doesn’t it look like a whole bucket of fun?

Mmmm, roadster pickup.

There were also a few later model cars that caught my eye. As a kustom man, many of them I viewed as potential projects, such as this lovely fairlane already sporting some kustom touches. This moggy traveller will certainly catch a few peoples eyes, especially yours eh Spencer?

The last picture I will add to this piece is this one. It’s not a great picture – it’s a new digital camera and I’m still getting used to it – but it is a great car. This one is, I believe, fresh out this year and is a fantastic machine. Expect to see a lot of this car in the mags this year – it deserves it.

So all in all, not a bad turnout for the first running of this event although the weather was awful over the weekend. I sincerely hope that this event will grow in years to come, it certainly seems that with Run to the Sun the following weekend, many people could come for a week and take in both events.

Thanks to Paul Dorrington uk-hotrods member for this great write-up..
