Run to the Sun 2002 By Paul Dorrington

Newquay, Cornwall

Wow, is it that time already? Where has the winter gone and am I really only a month away from the target I set myself to get my car on the road?  There’s not much time left, so I guess that I had better get myself off to a show for the day.

I did at least have the 4-day bank holiday weekend as an excuse and although the usual abundance of VWs greeted me, there were still some cars to drool over. Mike Noble was there as ever in his pretty red coupe (Hi Mike) as were several new cars for this year.

Among the new cars were a beautiful little modified and a coupe with some very interesting kustom touches. This really caught my eye, as kustoms are really my cup of tea. The kustom caps on the wheels, the paint, and the interior – all with kustom influences. I love it.

A new gold hiboy also caught my eye. This car looks to have taken some cues from Pete Tyas’ coupe and has captured the spirit without looking like a copy. I took several pics of this car but they all came out with the same chap standing in front of it – Grrrr.

This Consul was probably my favourite car of the show. Looking for all the world like a nice mild kustom, it took a second look to notice that the roof is not standard. This car works very well as an overall concept, no single part of it draws the attention. This one deserves a feature.

In the rows of VW campers and buses that are always in attendance at RTTS, it takes something special to draw peoples attention. Last year it was a severely channeled, BMW powered van – this year it was this.

With its major chop, interesting front-end treatment and wood paneled interior, it certainly attracted attention.

The show threw up its usual oddities including a very nice stock Chevy coupe. I’m sure that there were many there who were standing looking at it and considering where they would cut first

So now it’s back to the garage and on  with the work. Will I make my deadline? Who knows but I spent an afternoon at a show and still had an extra day in the garage. Let’s hope the Queen has some more anniversaries soon – I like these 4-day weekends.
