Page 7 Steering to Heaven!

The background looks odd cus I had to remove the washing that
was drying on the line :o)
Now the steering was finally being sorted I put the body panels back on to see how it was going to sit.

Spot anything different? Yep the 18" smoothies where on to get a proper feel whooo!

Well here it is done, Jason Springate made me a splined shaft, Langy shortened the Jag moveable Uj and it all hooked up nice and misses the exhaust nicely.

With a bit of jiggery
pokery, it finally snapped into place with just the right angle on the Uj's so
not to cause any bind. I made a bracket to hold the support bearing and now the
suspension can move all it wants and the the jag uj will dampen out any movement
of the crossmember cool!!
The Borgeson dilemma? well they sent me a Uj all
efficient like in a couple of days... it came err hey ya gotta laugh or ya'd
cry, they had only sent a Uj with Chevy pitch one side and fukin Chrysler the
other Arghhhhhhh so what did I do?? I sat for 4 hours and meticulously filed
with a needle file the one offending pitched spline until the shaft fit... er so
still no wiser whether the Jag pitch is Chevy or Chrysler ;o) *twats* But hey it
is behind me now the steering is done and works bang on!

If you go back to the original version of my column bracket, you will see why I absolutely hated it... Now I could forget about the steering shafts, I could concentrate on the column and on making it look better... They always say the simplest ideas work best and what could be simpler than this drop column? it is just 12mm solid bar bent and welded to the column ( I have welded on the rear so the weld wont be seen) and then tacked to a plate bolted to the dash.. real sturdy and neat I think
.. and for the price of nowt!!! I now have to work out
how to remove the old steering lock and old brackets... but still keep the
columns supported Ok?? apart from a session of final welding everything is done, all that heart ache and now
it is done.. what a relief.. It has a nice driving position and should be great
on them long hauls.. Groovy!!
Also fitted the rolled and louvered rear pan..... er now what lights???? any
ideas?? 50's Pontiac I fancy.. but not sure.. I have some new BMW mini ones
maybe... at least they would be bright and safe... er Caddy??? I did buy some
oblong ones from Geordie Paul... but there aint nowhere to fit them on the pan
anyway.... maybe on the bottom of the rear wings... Bloody tailgate is bent and
buckled guy who was straightening it says it wont straighten ... so may have to
make one yet. Its coming on but miles still left to do... ! I am trying to be
positive now I cant wait to get it in paint and on the final assembly... its
gonna be a 60's shade of Satin Shiny Gold with all black running gear and
chassis.. interior will be a grey and blue mix I think? I cant afford a
professional job so it will be what ever I can scrounge or make again.. ;o)
