Charge of the light brigade Page 14

Or maybe it should be titled how not to French caddy lights. I really have no experience of this job in any way shape or form. I asked on the ukhotrods e-mail group and the response wasn't definitive, but I got some ideas... but of course I had to do it my way.. which was wrong as it happened, but they are in now, they do work and they will look ok. I have made myself a lot more work though, by not cutting the pipe used for the light mountings long enough.

Oh yeah and make note of where the pipe join is ;o) or you will have a scrap one or two as I did..
I thank Chris Hart for his input which if I had followed to the letter I would of had a much neater finished job. But I had a better idea didn't I..er not!!
So all I can say is, this is how I did the job, learn by my mistakes and you should have less work.

The basic idea is to cut two lengths of pipe that the lights will fit in mine was 84mm exhaust, weld the end caps in that the lights mount to. Then tack the two pieces together in the position you want the finished lights to be in. Then bolt some thread bar into the cap end and though an accurately drilled hole in the wing.. I didn't do that either as I couldn't see how to mark the hole so I did it the way you see below.

I made up this basic jig to get the two pieces in as accurate and equal spacing as I could. I cut the angle on the pipe roughly the shape of the rear wing, so I could get them near enough to mark onto the masked out wing (Fender).

I think my one mistake was to cut the pipe to short, I only wanted the mounting on the light covered with the frenching, but because I did that exactly where I wanted it... the pipe was to short, hence the gaps I now have to fill with metal .. which will be a load of work to get as prefect as they would of been if the pipe had been long enough... so don't do what I did eh and it will save you a lot of grief..

But wasn't to difficult a job, and the position is just what I wanted. They are LED bulbs and are very bright so I have the cool lights I wanted and bright be seen be safe ones to.. Reeesult..

Just a foot note the Truck has dropped some more and now so low it looks so so cool... but no suspension travel to speak of.. well 1 inch to the bump stops.. would soon stop being fun on our bumpy roads... so I have got some std Jag springs now.. to try.. oooow my favourite job fitting Jag front coils.. I cant wait ;o)
